Energy

We believe that building a cleaner, greener, fairer world starts with a resilient and diverse energy supply

Metrica has a wealth of experience across wind, solar, hydroelectricity, alternative energy generation and storage

With this experience, we are committed to supporting the transition to net zero through clean, high yield energy infrastructure. The increasing diversity of generation methods also requires the development of efficient energy storage and grid balancing facilities, such as battery storage, gas peaking and hydrogen production.

Staff at Metrica have worked on some of the most complex and contentious projects in the UK, including:

  • + 50 BESS sites
  • + 1,500 acres of ground-mounted solar pv
  • + 4 GW wind energy

We offer a range of services to support the energy industry including:

Wind Energy

Productive, well-designed wind farms require consideration of potential environmental impacts from the outset, particularly as technology progresses toward larger turbine models and suitable sites become increasingly constricted by the cumulative effects of existing developments.

Staff at Metrica have worked on numerous wind energy projects ranging from 100 kW single turbines to multi-megawatt wind farms across the UK and internationally, both on-shore and off-shore.

Overall, we have helped secure over 4 GW of wind energy

We have also supported the development of co-located energy storage and solar PV facilities alongside wind farms.

We apply best practice measures, using industry-standard software and equipment, tailoring our service to the specific needs of a particular project. We have resolved many different issues, including complex cumulative scenarios, objections from consultees and third parties, restrictive planning conditions and complaints from neighbouring residents.

We provide a number of technical disciplines, including those unique to wind energy such as shadow flicker assessment, ensuring that the best possible design is submitted for planning approval. Our high standard of reporting and close consultation with Planning Authorities minimises risk whilst maximising generation capacity.

Planning consent is by no means the end of the process. The procurement and detailed design processes offer the opportunity to maximise the potential of a wind energy development, and ongoing monitoring ensures the development is able to operate as efficiently as possible, with minimal environmental impact.

Solar PV

Utility-scale solar PV offers an increasingly affordable and secure renewable energy supply. With experience of working on some of the largest solar PV developments in the UK and Europe, Metrica works with clients across the project lifecycle to unlock the potential of solar energy. We have also supported the development of co-located energy storage, solar PV and wind turbines, further enhancing energy security and optimising land use.

We have helped secure consent for over 1500 acres of ground mounted solar PV

Our consultants work closely with developers, planners and engineers to ensure that the best possible design is submitted for planning approval. Our high standard of reporting and close consultation with Planning Authorities minimises risk whilst maximising generation capacity.

By working with Metrica, you can be sure that your project is in skilled and experienced hands. We apply best practice measures, using industry-standard software and equipment, tailoring our service to the specific needs of a particular project. We have resolved many different issues, including objections from consultees and third parties, restrictive planning conditions and complaints from neighbouring residents.

Hydroelectricity

We help our clients harness the full potential of hydropower and where possible, integrating with other forms of generation and storage.

With experience of a wide range and scale of projects including run-of-river and pumped storage, our hydrologists and acoustics consultants can provide the specialised technical skills to identify, assess and support the development of hydropower, both in terms of its construction, grid connection and operation.

The procurement and detailed design processes offer the opportunity to maximise the potential of a hydropower development, ensuring the efficient operation and minimal environmental impact.

Energy Storage & Grid Balancing

The transition to a decarbonised, distributed energy system presents unique challenges necessitating new methods of energy storage and electrical grid balancing technologies.

Our environmental teams have the specialist engineering, technical and management expertise needed to help developers solve challenges related to the net zero transition. Staff at Metrica have substantial experience in a wide range of such facilities, including:

  • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
  • Grid Balancing Technologies
  • Energy Transmission and Distribution
  • Hydrogen Production and Storage
  • Gas Peaking Plants
  • Co-location of Energy Storage with Energy Generation, including wind turbines and solar PV

Overall, we have helped secure consent for over 50 BESS, Grid Balancing and Gas Peaking projects.

Alternative Energy

Diversifying the energy generation mix is increasingly seen as the key in ensuring a stable, efficient and clean supply. In addition to more well-established renewable sources such as wind, hydropower and solar energy, Metrica offers expertise in the assessment of a number of unconventional sources, including:

  • Hydrogen Production and Storage
  • Flywheel Energy Systems
  • Energy from Waste
  • Biomass
  • Anaerobic Digestion

We have resolved many different issues, objections from consultees and third parties, and restrictive planning conditions. Following planning consent, we offer value engineering services as part of the detailed design process to minimise impacts, along with Environmental Permitting and operational compliance monitoring.
