Understanding Glint and Glare

Glint and glare occur when sunlight is reflected from a surface toward light-sensitive receptors. The terms are defined as:

  • Glint – a momentary flash of bright light; and
  • Glare – a continuous source of bright light.

What is a Glint and Glare Assessment?

A glint and glare assessment is a detailed investigation into the potential hazard caused by reflected sunlight from a development. It calculates the timing, intensity, and duration of glint and glare effects for a given location.

Assessments are applicable to:

  • Solar PV developments (roof-mounted panels to large-scale solar farms); and
  • Building façades and reflective surfaces (commercial, office, or high-rise developments).

Through modelling, the assessment considers:

  • The position, tilt, and orientation of reflective surfaces, including solar panels or building façades;
  • The location of nearby light-sensitive receptors, including dwellings, pedestrians, roads, rail, and aircraft flight paths;
  • The sun’s path across the sky (elevation and azimuth); and
  • Local topography and heights of both reflectors and receptors.

The assessment evaluates whether glint or glare effects may pose hazards or constitute an unreasonable impact on neighbouring communities or traffic. Where necessary, it also includes mitigation measures such as screening, anti-glare materials, or adjustments to surface orientation.
