Project Overview: Solar Farm near Cupar, Fife
Metrica Environmental Consulting delivered a comprehensive glint and glare assessment for a proposed solar farm near Cupar, Fife. As part of the consultation process, Fife Council requested an assessment of glare on a proposed residential development, as well as a relief road in the surrounding area. As specialist glint and glare consultants, we applied industry‑standard SGHAT‑based modelling to assess potential reflective effects across residential, road and aviation receptors.
How Project Design Informs Our Glint and Glare Assessment Methodology
The solar farm features fixed‑tilt, south‑facing solar PV panels, and our assessment took account of the surrounding residential, transport and aviation environments to ensure a robust understanding of possible glint and glare effects. Key panel areas were refined to reduce exposure to the greatest number of nearby receptors, including orientation to ensure panels face away from closest road sections. We defined appropriate study areas for each receptor type and applied SGHAT‑based modelling supported by national, international and aviation guidance to ensure a realistic assessment outcome.
Glint and Glare Impact Findings for Residential, Road and Aviation Receptors
The assessment found no significant glint or glare effects at any receptor. For residential receptors, all predicted impacts fell well within accepted thresholds. Road users on nearby routes were expected to experience only brief, low‑intensity glare under worst‑case conditions, with no meaningful impact likely in practice. An additional appraisal of a local road (the A913) similarly identified only minimal, low‑level glare over a very limited section. Aviation receptors – including the nearby airfield’s runway approach and control tower – were predicted to experience no glint or glare effects.
