If necessary, we undertake background noise monitoring in accordance with best practice guidance set out in the Institute of Acoustics Good Practice Guide, typically using long-term unattended surveys correlated with wind speed data. Monitoring locations are selected to represent the nearest and / or most sensitive receptors.
We use specialist software to carry out wind turbine noise modelling, predicting noise levels at surrounding properties. This includes consideration of turbine sound power data, site layout, topography, atmospheric conditions and other nearby wind farms. Outputs typically include noise contour plots and detailed prediction tables.
Assessments are generally undertaken in line with the UK Government’s Assessment and Rating of Wind Turbine Noise (ARWTN), formerly ETSU‑R‑97: The Assessment of Noise from Wind Farms. This approach establishes site-specific noise limits, ensuring that wind turbine noise emissions are appropriately controlled across a range of wind speeds.
Where other wind farms are present or consented nearby, we assess cumulative wind farm noise to demonstrate compliance with combined noise limits. This is often a key consideration for wind energy developments in more constrained areas.
